Sega Raises the Red Flag Against Disc Death
While Sony gears up for a disc-free world by 2028, Sega's president Shoji Otsumi stepped out publicly to say: hold on a second. The guy made it clear that physical media still holds real value, and phasing it out completely isn't the right move.
Digital Matters, But Discs Aren't Dead Yet
Otsumi didn't deny that digital distribution has become essential — it absolutely has, especially with PC gaming exploding. But he raised a crucial point: millions of gamers worldwide still prefer owning a physical copy of their games. Whether it's for collecting, that tangible sense of ownership, or simply because their internet connection isn't reliable enough.
Honestly, that's a logical stance. Sony made a pure business decision — digital means more profit and less storage costs. But that doesn't mean the millions of players who want their discs should be left without a choice. Digital monopolies worry me, and from my own experience, I can tell you plenty of people still prefer actual ownership over a digital license that could vanish if servers ever go down.
Does This Actually Matter?
Here's the thing: Sega's holding this position because they know the disc market hasn't completely died yet. The future might not be physical media, but killing it off entirely feels premature.
My advice to gamers who treasure their physical collections: enjoy them now, because choices are shrinking. And to other publishers out there: listen to Sega — multiple options beat monopolies every time.
