Wolverine's Coming Fully on Disc — And This Might Be the Last PlayStation Game Like That

Wolverine will be playable straight from the disc — for the first time in years

In news that's honestly wild we even need to announce, Insomniac confirmed that the disc version of Marvel's Wolverine will be fully playable when it launches on PS5 on September 15. No forced downloads. No having to pull down the entire game after you open the box.

Sounds obvious, right? It's really not. For years now, PlayStation has shifted into this semi-digital model: the disc is basically just a "key" that forces you to download the game from servers. A digital copy wrapped in physical packaging. I've bought games on disc and realized I needed 150 gigs of internet to actually play the thing — it's ridiculous, honestly.

Why this matters more than you think

Real talk, this reflects something depressing: we've reached a point where we're celebrating that a game will actually work as a disc. That's no progress — that was the standard a decade ago.

But the bigger question is: will Wolverine actually be the last major PlayStation game that comes on a disc you can play without internet? If the answer's yes, we're looking at the end of an era. An era where games were actually yours — not some temporary license tied to Sony's servers.

Personally, I respect Insomniac for doing this, but it also bumps me out that it's newsworthy. People with spotty internet, countries dealing with service outages — those folks deserved a real choice a long time ago.

So who should buy the disc version?

I'd say grab the disc if your internet's unreliable, or if you genuinely want to own the game without being tethered to Sony's servers. But if you're used to digital and you've got fast internet, there's zero difference — go with whatever you prefer.

Just remember: this might be one of your last chances to own a AAA game on PS5 without a digital umbilical cord attached.
