Marvelous Cancels Story of Seasons Mobile Game After Splitting from Tencent

Story of Seasons Mobile is Dead: A 6-Year Alliance Collapsed Overnight

On July 31st, 2026, Marvelous' board of directors made a decision that crushed years of lingering hopes: cancelling the Story of Seasons mobile game that was already in development. The decision was shocking, but it didn't come out of nowhere — the collapse of the business alliance that had tied Marvelous to Tencent and its investment arm Image Frame Investment for six years was enough to flip the entire table.

How Did the Alliance Fall Apart?

This wasn't some personal beef or development drama — it was purely a financial decision. Tencent reviewed its capital distribution strategy and decided to restructure its investments across Japanese game studios, so Image Frame Investment (their subsidiary) decided to sell off its stake in Marvelous. That separation was the direct and obvious reason the project got axed.

The official reasons the company gave were straightforward: "project profitability" and "business environment." Translation? Without Tencent's financial backing, the investment just wasn't worth the risk anymore.

What Changed After the Split?

The shift in Marvelous' ownership structure was massive. Tencent was no longer a major shareholder or subsidiary, and the stakes got reshuffled between them. Hayao Nakayama stepped up as the company's largest shareholder, while Amuse Capital Investment Company came in as a new major investor. Even external director Shin Joon Oh resigned from his position because of the alliance falling apart.

Six years of development and investment ended with a single pen stroke in a board meeting.

But Is This Really the End?

Not entirely. The licensing agreement for Story of Seasons rights between Marvelous and Tencent is still active — and that means one important thing: Marvelous still has the option to partner with another publisher to produce a different mobile game from the series in the future. The doors aren't permanently locked, but they're definitely closed for now.

The real question: was this the right call? In my opinion, probably yeah. Look, I get the disappointment — but most attempts to port big games to mobile end in genuine letdown. Either the monetization model (ads and in-app purchases) ruins the experience, or the forced simplification for mobile kills the original game's soul. Maybe scrapping a project that might not have lived up to expectations was smarter than launching a disappointing game that damages the franchise's reputation.

What About Players Now?

There's no digital version of Story of Seasons coming to mobile in the foreseeable future. Your realistic option today is the versions already out on Nintendo Switch and other platforms — and honestly, those versions are excellent and deliver a complete experience worth your time.

My Take

If you're a farming sim fan and haven't tried Story of Seasons yet, go straight for the Switch version — you'll find a deep, satisfying experience with no compromises. But if you were specifically holding out for a lightweight mobile game, don't waste your time waiting. There are other solid alternatives in the app stores worth exploring right now.
