Hell Clock 2.0 — The Biggest Update in the Game's History on PC and Console, Plus a Massive Story Expansion

Hell Clock 2.0: The Biggest Update in the Game's History Just Arrived — and on Console

On July 9, 2026, what players had been waiting for finally happened: Hell Clock 2.0 dropped hard. Not just on Steam where the game started, but it finally reached PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — alongside the massive Cursed War expansion. The update that was officially scheduled for July 14 came early, and the result is that Hell Clock players now have more content than the game has ever seen before.

In my honest opinion, this update is a turning point for Brazilian studio Rogue Snail. The game that drew its world from historical wars like the Canudos War and the Paraguayan War is now stronger and deeper — but there's a lot of detail, and plenty of players have gotten lost in all the new systems.

What Actually Changed?

First: most of 2.0's content is free for everyone who already owns the game. This is really important to know. If you bought Hell Clock for $19.99 on Steam, you get all the new stuff at no extra cost — except for the Cursed War expansion if you want it ($9.99).

I noticed the team chose to focus on one thing: making the game deeper for serious players. The new Ascension system is the clearest example of this.

Ascension System: The Real Endgame

Ascension is an advanced roguelike system aimed at players who've finished the main story. The idea is simple but powerful: you're given "penances" that raise Hell's level and the game's difficulty, and your goal is to complete three successful runs before you run out of attempts.

This means the game now has a long road after you finish a new chapter. You're no longer "done with the game" when you clear a new act — there's real depth now for players who want a bigger challenge.

Endless Nightmares: 16 Customizable Difficulty Tiers

The second new system is called Endless Nightmares, and it has 16 different difficulty levels. But here's what matters: you have customizable shards that let you tailor the challenge and rewards however you want.

The point is every player can actually choose a difficulty level that suits them, instead of being forced into one option.

Journey of Nightmares: Seasonal Rotating Content

The team added a seasonal mode called Journey of Nightmares where nightmare gates lead you to random enemy stages and boss encounters. The cool part is these encounters drop unique artifacts you won't find anywhere else.

This means the game now has a reason to come back to it every season — not just to kill time.

Dozens of New Relics

One thing I really liked is that most of the new Relics are free, including advanced Uber versions. This means playstyle strategies have completely changed — your old build might not be the best anymore.

Cursed War Expansion: A Whole New Story Chapter

If you want to buy the expansion ($9.99), you get a complete new story chapter: Act IV. This chapter takes place during the Paraguayan War — continuing the historical context that inspired the game's world from the start.

Act IV dives into the backstory of the character Pajeú, and features 6 new bosses you'll face. But more importantly, the team didn't just stop at the story — they added over ten new locations to explore.

Six Completely New Skills

Cursed War comes with 6 completely new skills:

  • Tupã's Wrath
  • Lead Sermon
  • Holy Fire
  • Jaguar Spear
  • Carcará Dive
  • Cilada

Each skill has relics specifically designed for it, so if you pick one you'll find real strategic depth. They're not just alternatives to the old skills.

New Planning Tool: Finally Share Your Build

The team improved build crafting in a way that was missing from the start: you can now import your save file into the Planner tool to share your build with other players. On top of that, you can share a public profile showing your entire build.

This opens the door for players to collaborate and learn from each other — something that was missing before.

Who Is This Update For?

If you're a casual player who games for fun and story, the free content is enough for you — Ascension, Endless Nightmares, and Journey of Nightmares will give you long hours of play without extra costs. The update didn't take away anything fundamental and lock it behind a paywall.

But if you play competitively or want the full story and new skills, Cursed War is worth the $9.99. The content is real and substantial.

Honestly, what surprised me is the team didn't try to force you to buy the expansion just to play. The free content is strong enough on its own.

My Final Recommendation

I'd tell any Hell Clock player — new or veteran — to try the free update first. Ascension and Endless Nightmares will give you a clear picture of where the game is heading. After that, decide if you want Cursed War based on how interested you are in the new story and skills.

If you're on console and haven't played Hell Clock before, now's the time. The game is more complete than ever, and the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are ready with all the same content and updates.
