Rockstar Killed Midnight Club 5 Because It Wasn't as Big as GTA... According to a Former Designer

Rockstar chose GTA over Midnight Club... and we all lost

I just heard something that genuinely bothered me: a former designer at Rockstar confirmed that the studio killed development on Midnight Club 5 simply because the franchise didn't rake in the fame and profits that Grand Theft Auto does. Not because the game was poorly made or the concept failed — but because it wasn't big enough by Rockstar's standards.

And that's what really got to me, honestly. Rockstar owns one of the greatest racing franchises in gaming history — Midnight Club delivered a unique experience we haven't seen replicated — but because GTA prints billions in revenue, everything else looks trivial in comparison. That's pure business logic, not artistic vision.

Why does this hurt as a player?

I've played the original Midnight Club games, and they were unforgettable urban racing experiences. The thrills, the freedom, the style — every element was crafted with care. Now, after years of silence, we learn the new project wasn't killed for legitimate creative reasons, but because pouring billions into GTA was simply more attractive to shareholders.

What worries me most is that this reflects a broader trend in the industry: major gaming companies laser-focus on cash cows and neglect bold, different ideas. Every studio wants its own version of GTA or Fortnite instead of taking creative risks.

Should we expect a comeback?

Honestly? I don't expect Midnight Club to return anytime soon. Not unless Rockstar decides that street racing fans and open-world enthusiasts deserve more than eternal limbo. But this news itself matters because it reminds us: we don't have to silently accept every cancellation from the big publishers.

My take: If you love street racing and open worlds, you deserve better than waiting around. Maybe it's time to support the indie projects trying to fill the void Rockstar left behind. The industry needs diversity, not monopolies.
